Rocio Isabel M. Espiritu, a 20-year-old Filipina currently majoring in interdisciplinary studies with the tracks of literature and communication, wants to be a veterinarian in the future. Growing up, Rocio lived a very simple but hard life, being the eldest of 3 she had to carry a lot of expectations from multiple family members. She can be considered as a “true blue Atenean” given that everyone in her family has graduated from Ateneo. Her grandfather already has a classroom named after him; due to the support he has given the university. The classroom is now named Octavio Espiritu and Family, it is located in SEC A, near the stairs. Rocio pursued the major of Interdisciplinary studies, a major very far from her dream job, to continue that legacy that their family will only graduate from the Ateneo de Manila University. However, she isn’t against the legacy that her family imposes, “Okay lang, i’m enjoying naman now” she said.
Handling animals to calm them down, collect blood, and many more, being a veterinarian requires a lot of courage. Rocio discovered her passion to tend to the needs of animals when she was 14, when her dog attacked her other dog, causing a massive bleeding for the latter. She carried her dog bloodied to the veterinary, and while her dog was given attention to, she surveyed the environment that she was in and realized that being a veterinarian is now her dream. After that incident she participated in an internship program in Vets in Practice in Alabang, which then strengthened her passion to help animals. “I once held my favorite animal, the monkey, during my shift in the vet and it was the best experience ever”. Her plan after graduating Ateneo is to enroll in another university, specifically University of Sydney and then pursue the major that she wants which is veterinary.
